CORONARY DILATATION (OR PERCUTANEOUS TRANSLUMINAL CORONARY ANGIOPLASTY)

This procedure restores normal blood circulation in coronary arteries which are narrowed or obstructed by atherosclerosis (fatty deposits in the vessel) and constitutes an alternative treatment to cardiac by pass grafting surgery.
The coronary arteries feed the cardiac muscle. There are three main coronary vessels which divide into branches (see drawing no. 1).
