CORONARY ATHEROSCLEROSIS

Atherosclerosis is characterized by the presence of fatty deposits, calcium and blood clots on the inner layers of the coronary arteries. When your coronary arteries are narrowed by atherosclerosis, you may experience chest pain (angina). The occlusion of coronary arteries may cause myocardial infarction.

The risk factors leading to atherosclerosis are mainly

  • smoking
  • a high rate of cholesterol
  • arterial hypertension
  • diabetes
  • obesity
  • lack of physical exercise
  • genetic predisposition.
