THE ARTERIES OF MEMBERS

The various nutrients necessary for the proper functioning of the body’s organs are supplied by the arteries.

The arteries of the lower limbs feed the leg muscles. Consequently, one of the earliest symptoms of peripheral arterial disease is the occurrence of cramping in the calves when walking (intermittent claudication). Indeed, atherosclerosis (link coronary atherosclerosis) causes narrowings which may evolve towards total arterial occlusion.

The major risk factor is smoking.
